Shari Hughson

Have you ever wondered how and why other people seem to just make things happen, do new activities, and lead really interesting lives?  Research has shown that routines, complacency, and patterns in life are actually making your performance, creativity, and learning sub-optimal.  Shari weaves a compelling tale of her adventures with simple methods for shaking up your life and stepping into discomfort! Join us for an energizing journey that starts with this first step.

Shari Hughson is an entrepreneur, social innovator, and extreme adventurer.  She started her first business in her 20s and won CIBC Entrepreneur of the Year before the age of 30.  Shari was awarded one of the 50 Most Influential Female Business and Entrepreneur Leaders of the Year by SME Canada 2021 and given a national honour from the First Nations Health Authority for a project that impacted the mental health of a remote community in 2013.

She has owned 6 health companies and 8 e-commerce sites, and today is the Executive Advisor for multiple global companies, the co-founder of Neuma Centre in Kingston, as well as a Faculty member in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Queen’s University.

Paid Internships for Postsecondary Students

The Ontario      government is providing over $10 million to help Mitacs — an organization      that builds research partnerships between postsecondary institutions and      industry — create 2,700 paid internships for postsecondary students which      will help them gain the skills they need to secure in-demand jobs after      graduation.

Two particularly relevant Mitacs programs include:

  • Accelerate, which enables college, polytechnic, and university students           across all disciplines to participate in applied research projects,           while allowing industry and not-for-profit organizations to benefit           from students’ talents to achieve their innovation goals.

  •
  • Business Strategy Internship, a program that offers           collaborative internships and matches students with businesses or           not-for-profit organizations to apply their technical expertise to           support business innovation activities.
  •

Queen's Career Apprenticeship Program: Kingston

The objective is to help new graduates launch their career while retaining skilled talent in the community. Employers who commit to a 12-month contract with a participant are reimbursed for four months of the gross salary to a maximum of $2,500 per month.

ALGONQUIN COLLEGE: Looking for Women Mentors

Algonquin College’s We Saved You a Seat(WSYAS) https://www.algonquincollege.com/future-students/we-saved-you-a-seat/  is working on a project to provide mentors to women who are graduating from We Saved You a Seat Programs:

-          Construction Engineering Technician,

-         Computer Systems Technician,

-         Computer Systems Technician (Pembroke),

-         Electrical Engineering Technician,

-         Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technician,

-         Mechanical Engineering Technology, and

-         Powerline Technician.

We are also looking for role models to be featured in a video to highlight careers in your field.  https://www.algonquincollege.com/future-students/we-saved-you-a-seat/fletcher-electrical-engineering-grant/

We are looking for:

• Mentors for WSYAS students.

• Women to be featured in a video to highlight careers in We Saved You a Seat Programs.

Mentors – to help guide graduates to the start of their working life journey.  You can find more information about the mentorship and register here: https://www.algonquincollege.com/future-students/we-saved-you-a-seat/mentorship-guidelines/

Women Role Models - We are making videos that show women at work. Young women need to see these role models, performing their daily tasks and seeing their work environments, so they can see themselves in these careers.  There still exists a lack of representation and a great confidence gap for women entering into technical fields.  These videos will showcase women succeeding in Technology careers which will inspire and attract young women to We Saved You a Seat Programs.

If you are able to be a role model and/or be features in a video, please contact reilank@algonquincollege.com
