More Canadians are living longer than ever before. Life expectancy is increasing and we can expect to live to a ripe old age, calendar age that is. The quality of our lives and our health is up to us.

Most of us do not want to live to be 90 if the last 30 years are filled with illness, disability and dependence on family. We want to feel good and have energy for all the activities we enjoy.  We want those extra years to be quality years. Longer lives do not mean much if they are not active lives. The quality of those years will largely be dictated by the choices we make in the preceding years, but current choices will also correct, support and improve our quality of life to stave off the aging process.

The human body is designed to move. Movement heals the body and to quote a physiotherapist I know “motion is lotion”!

Inactive lifestyles decline physiological functioning, weaken muscles, produce stiff joints and low energy levels. We are all getting older. There’s going to be some possible joint and spinal issues, repetitive stress injuries, surgeries and simply genetic predispositions that we may be faced with. This type of movement is very adaptable and body friendly to these changes.

I believe in a “less is more” approach, non-aggressive, controlled movement.

In learning how to recognize, understand and address our body’s needs, you will achieve your goals.

So, let’s make the necessary changes in our lives and embark on a new path to improved health and wellness- exercise – so we can continue to enjoy and experience the best life has to offer.
